A good group of three war-date Union soldier (ambulance driver's) letters, totaling 11pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. C, 96th Ohio Battalion, from New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana in preparation of the attack on Mobile, Alabama, reading, in small part: "-[Camp Kennersville, La., Feb. 13, 1865]-we are still in Louisiana-we have a very pretty camp, good sod & green grass-it is reported that there is one hundred thousand troops going to Mobile from this department. There will have to be some troops left along the river-direct 96 Battalion O. V. I. Department of the Gulf-[New Orleans, Feb. 18]-the boat went-nitee before last at eleven-by tonight they will be at Mobile on the sand-we will go by the lake-we haven't drew no mules nor ambulances-we have drew 2 loads of stretchers-I think that peace matters has all fell threw. Don't you think we will have to fight on this summer-[Encamp at the Lake 7 miles from New Orleans, Feb. 24]-we are laying here waiting transportation. One [ambulance] train is gone that started before. [It] got in a storm & had to throw their mules allover board. They came back & fitted out & gone again-I will stay in the train for I have [been] detailed for a driver-we will get off pretty soon. We are expecting a boat every day & niteer. A. Thayer-".
