War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. C, 96th Ohio Battalion, Mobile, March 5, 1865," reading, in part: "-we left camp at the Lake the morning of the first [&] landed here the evening of the 2nd-a coming the lake [was] just a little rough enough to make the boat rock a little-I am still in the ambulance train. I have a good ambulance & mule team. I hitched up this morning & had a ride. I wish I could stay with the train till my time was out. We are camped on the island that Fort Gaines is on. It is a very pretty place, no timber, but pine that is thick where it hasn't been cut down. We have 21 ambulances in our train. The Battalion is over the other side of the bay about 5 miles from here-they have reorganized the old 13 Corps-we belong to the first brigade, 3 division, 13 Core-that has done more than any core in this department-the first move will be to advance on Mobile-we have a large army to start with-A. A. Thayer-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Light soling, else VG.
