War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. C, 96th Ohio Battalion, "Camp of the 96 O. V. I., Fort Morgan, Alabama, March 11, 1865," reading, in part: "-we expect to leave here every day cant tell when nor what direction, probably to Mobile. We can hear cannonading in that direction today probably the gun boats. When we start every 12 men has to carry an ax & spade-you spoke of aunty Horn worrying about Bill reenlisting. You can tell her that she need not worry about that-& about me you have my word -I have promised you that I would not enlist again till you see fit to let me-Dan has come back to the company & I am bunking with him. The oven is stored here till we return from the expedition-we have no transportation furnished have every thing to carry-after we make an advance then the teams will come up-the officers has to come down to a pup tent like the rest, but the Col. he has a reg[ular] tent-Dr. Hess is in a pup tent. The colonel [Brown] only one horse, adjutant one horse & Dr. one horse & quarter master one horse. That is all the horses in the regt-A. A. Thayer-".
