War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. C, 96th Ohio Battalion, McIntosh Bluffs, Alabama, May 6, 1865," reading, in part: "-we haven't much to do. We move here on the 26 of last month. We have been on a days scout. Since we have been here our brigade got a large drove of cattle & sheep, but they were all poor. At home you would think they could not be eat[en] but we eat anything-I think we will be home by the 4 of July for I think the war is over now. We cant find any sogers here. They have been coming in giving themselves up. They say the war is played out. There has been several come in since we have been here-we are camp in the pine wood 75 miles from Mobile-Annie, there are-now good news here today [of the] surrender of Johnson's army. The news is the rebel fleet here has surrendered. It is expected here today-we will be in Mobile in a few days-A. A. Thayer-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included.
