War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. C, 96th Ohio Battalion, "Encamp at Mobile, Alabama, May 10, 1865," reading, in part: "-we left McIntosh Bluffs the 9 [and] came down on the rebel fleet. They came down & surrendered to us, 24 boats, 3 gunboats-one man of war. She was avery good boat. They were a good lot of boats all threw-the regular surrender was today of troops, boats & all Ala is gone up. The rebels has played out-we was a little much for them all round. Annie, I received 4 letters last nite-but it was rather queer in your dressing a letter in mourning on such occasion [with the end of the war] for it caused great curiosity among those that see it. Dan got my letters & thought there was someone dead. Everything almost is dressed in mourning. I wish he had lived to settle the war but I think that person will take care of them-the talk is now is that we have another Red River trip-I think we will be home to spend the 4 of July with you-we will make old Vernon ring-when I get home we will live happy as be as. I wouldn't live with anyone that couldn't live peacefully with. WE are still in the pine woods 2 miles from the city & 4 miles from Whistler, a very pretty camp . We probably will move to New Orleans-A. A. Thayer-". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Minor soiling, else VG.
