Two end of war-date Union soldier letters, totaling 4 1/2pp. 8vo. & 4to., written by Pvt. Alfred A. Thayer, Co. C, 96th Ohio Battalion, reading, in part: "-[on the Mississippi near Cairo, July 18, 1865]-we are getting along very slow. We were mustered out on the 7 of this month & got transpiration the 8-got to New Orleans the 11 & loaded on a Mississippi boat-when I get home I am going to get me a decent suit for in the last 2 years I have saved 73 dollars-Annie, Dan & me are still sleeping together but I expect change bed fellows in a week or 2. What do you say to that. Annie, don't make any calculations to meat us at Columbus-for I expect one of the biggest rows that we ever had. Don't worry about me for I aint going to be in [it.]-I don't think it would be prudent for any ladies to go on the cars with some of the boys-[Camp Chase, Ohio, July 28, 1865]-I expect to be home before this but our officers is behind as usual. I am very anxious to get away from here-I cant tell [if] we may be played off this week-Dan & me are all well-Dan will come home with me. He is a perfect brother to me-& Ema will make a good match-A. A. Thayer." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Thayer's phonetic spelling and loose grammar had been corrected. Spotting, else VG. (Two letters & two covers.)
