Confederate soldier's 2pp letter with original cover written by Clayton Wilson who, in March 1862, both Clayton and his younger brother, Joseph Wyatt Wilson, Jr. (1842-1892) enlisted in the 1st Battalion of Hilliard's Alabama Legion. Datelined, Camp 1st Battalion Legion, Big Creek Gap, Tennessee, March 28, 1863. In part, " .. I am under the impression you will hear of stirring events from Middle & East Tennessee 'ere long. It is believed that "Rosecranz" is trying to flank "Bragg" and it is the intention of General "Johnston" to let him do so and then fall in his rear, withdraw the forces from these Gaps along Cumberland Mountains to hold old "Rosecrans" in check, while they-Bragg's Army-cuts off his supplies, reinforcements, &c., and will before the last of April bag the "Dutchman" ¹ and his whole concern. Things seem to look very promising and will no doubt turn out well. ... It is no use to tell you where we are going but we are not going into Kentucky right away. You will find out in time. I will get letters if directed to me at Big Creek Gap [just] so they have Hilliard's or Alabama Legion on them. Always put 1st Battalion on them. ..."
