Union Sailors letter, 2pp. with original cover, datelined U.S. Bank Release, Dec. 13, 1863. In part, "... there has been one prize taken ... she was loaded with cotton but it got afire. She was a new steamer built about two months ago (iron). ... Night before last we had quite an exciting time on board... some of the crew got drunk ... We had a regular nxxxxr riot. My darkey got rapped over the head ... another nxxxxr got kicked about some, had his clothes heaved overboard. Our officers proceeded to put some men in irons ... The officers armed themselves with revolvers and drove the men into the forecastle by pointing the pistols at the men's head while they got the irons on. Signed only Jim with cover addressed Elihu Gifford, New Bedford Mass.
