Document Signed "Jno Withers" as Assistant Adjutant General on pre-printed form "Adjutant and Inspector General's Office" Richmond, June 29, 1863, Special Orders No 154, 8" x 10". In part, "In consideration of his previous good character and circumstances in his case, the sentence imposed by the General Court Martial ... May 1862 on Joseph E Cox, then a private in the Battalion of Louisiana Voluteers ... is remitted. He will be released from custody and returned to Captain Miller's Cavalry." Cox had served in New Co. E, 1st Special Battalion Wheat's Louisiana Infantry known as the Louisiana Tigers. When Major Chatman R. Wheat was seriously wounded at the 1st Bull Run, with the end result of his death, that began the demise of that regiment which by 1862 had reduced to less than 100 men and disbanded as "unmagable."
