A confederate civilian, self-covering 4pp letter, written by "J.W. Massey" to his father William B. Massey, Spotsylvania Va. The Jefferson Davis stamp is canceled from Richmond May 14, 1863. Datelined, Richmond May 13, 1863. In part "Such a great while has elapsed since I heard from you ... waited on the Post Master and complained to him .. They seem to think it is alright ... if performs the trip once a month. The fact is bribery and corruption is the order of the day ... my friends have told me that I am too hard on my denunciation of the public functionaries, but when you become as familiar with the intrigues of the courts of Richmond as I am, you'll find I am not wrong. the great battle of the Rappahannock is over and God has blessed our Armies once again with victory - but the victory is shorn of its glory by the death of the immortal Jackson - the hero of the war and the hope of the country is gone. He died as he lived, an honest man. He fell on the bloody battlefield of Chancellorsville ... his body has been received here and was escorted through the city and laid in state in the Capitol. ... You have no doubt heard of the great Yankee Raid. It was indeed a most brilliant affair. They scoured the country and came within two miles of this place ..."
