Confederate 2pp. Letter written by Charleston Merchant SS Roberts writing to William Birnie, President of the Bank of South Carolina. Datelined Summerville, 17th Jan. 1864. In part, "... there has been many changes in our good old city .. I found Broad Street had been completely deserted ... great many removed to the south of Calhoun St. which I remarked was very foolish of them for days shelling will tell them that they will be compelled to make another move higher up. Last Friday the Yanks threw a shell into Charlotte St and another in John St, east of Meeting St. What a stampede these two devils have caused among the people. The banks and portion of the Government departments removed by daylight Saturday. ... I do hope the Yanks may never reach my new quarters. On Thursday last, the enemy put a shell through the shed of our old store which did not stop until he reached the second floor. There the gentleman belched out all his venom & made sad havoc all around. ... Not many panes of glass to be seen over the building. To my astonishment, there is not one piece of shell to be found in the rooms. I noticed several holes in the walls, so I suppose the fragments have hid themselves. The So. W.R.R. bank was also struck and received much more injury than your building.. Yesterday when I was down on Broad St, the shells came whistling over my head like so many mock birds. ... I took a farewell look at the old place & said to myself, 'Old woman, this will be the last visit I pay you until our esteemed friends shall stop send so many black pills ..."
