A group of three Confederate soldier's letters written by George B. Dewese who mustered into "K" Co. NC 56th Infantry, 7/28/1862. He was hospitalized 3/30/1863 Goldsboro, NC. And, was Killed on 8/21/1864 at Globe Tavern, VA. All the letters are written from Petersburg Virginia and include; A 4pp., letter, June 19, 1864 to his sisters, in part, "We had a pretty hot time with the Yankees night before last. ... We charged their breastworks ... driving them out, killing a great many of them but losing a great number of our own men. We had six or seven of our Co. C. wounded Wm. Osborne and Ben Brown were wounded in the head. Capt Alexander was shot through the bowels and supposed to be mortal. ... there is no hope of his recovery. .. The Yankees are less than a mile of the city with a very heavy force. Gen. Lee arrived with a considerable force. ... The Yankees have quit trying to get to Richmond their old route ... It is said the Gen. Early has possession of Arlington Heights and is in transition to shell Washington City. I hope he will be able to demolish it completely. ...", plus, A 2pp., letter June 25th to his mother, in part; "The Lord in his boundless mercy has sheltered thus far my head from the deadly missiles of the enemy. ... Our troops charged portions of the enemy's line yesterday, but were repulsed, suffering a considerable loss in killed and prisoners... A continual picket firing is kept up. .. Our case is desperate but we still survive ..." ... plus, Another 2pp letter to his sister, August 2, 1864. In part; " Things have been tolerable since the 30th. The enemy blew up our works on Saturday morning the 30th and killed a good many men and took our breastworks but were soon driven back with terrible slaughter. The nxxxxxs came in front and the whites in the rear to drive 0n them. The blacks were shown no mercy ...."
