A Union artilleryman gets ready to see Old Abe, 4pp. 8vo., written on "Then conquer we must" patriotic stationery, by Artificer Nelson Danes, Battery E, 1st New York Light Artillery, "Camp Barry, Washington, D. C. January 5, 1862," to "Becky & Emry," in part: "- we are gaining ground. There will be a big blow struck soon. There is a great many batteries here besides ours. They are Regulars. Their orders is to have three days rations cook & ready to march at a minutes warning - there is five in our tent. One has a lame side. I had some bad luck some thief stole my overcoat. I made a search but could not find it. I shall have to buy me another which will cost me ten dollars - this war will be closed up this year unless we start was with some other nation. We have some six hundred & 30 thousand in the field. We are not afraid to fight - I have just come in from sword inspection- I am going to see Uncle Abe Lent [Lincoln] this week - Nelson Daines -". Expected wear, else VG.
