Great Union soldier's letter written by Ira S. Jeffers who enlisted on 8/20/1862 at Port Crane, NY as a Private and was Mustered Out on 6/9/1865 at Bladensburg, MD. The 4pg letter is written on extraordinary letterhead with a printed sketch, "View of Harper's Ferry Virginia" published by JW Bond, Baltimore. Datelined Pleasant Valley, Near Harper's ferry, Oct. 24th 1862, in part, "I paid 3 cents for this sheet of paper so you could form some idea of the place where we are. ... i think John Brown ought to be hung for trying to get the nxxxxrs out of such a place ..." He continues with reports of fellow soldiers falling ill.
