War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sergeant Joseph W. Padelford, Co. D, 11th Rhode Island Volunteers, "In Camp Miner's Hill, Va., January 4, 1863", in part: "- we have had some stirring times since Sunday. We were in line all Christmas morning and it was noon before we took our arms and it took us all the afternoon to clean them - Sunday night we was called up and formed in line of battle then we was ordered to pack our knapsacks and at one o'clock we marched to miles cross road some 7 or 6 miles through mud and over some of the worst of roads to entrap [J. E. B.] Stuart's Cavalry but they give us the slip and have been playing around our pickets - has drove them in once - we remained over Monday - we was ordered back to camp, a job which we were in no hurry to perform - we have been called up 4 times this last week at night - Joe." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Negligible soiling, else VG.
