Union soldier 4pp. letter with original cover, written by Edward F. Tubbs who mustered into "I" Co. PA 14th Cavalry, 10/27/1862. He died of disease on 12/17/1864 and is buried at Winchester, VA. Dateline, Harpers Ferry VA, nd (February 17, 1863). The patriotic cover shows a faint CDC also Harpers Ferry. Tudds is writing his mother, in part, "The reason I did not write yesterday was because I had to go on a scout. ... 5:00 at night ..We were ordered to mount and go to Berryville. 100 of us which we did not reach that place until 12:00. We stopped about 1/2 hour and did finding anything started back towards camp. Came about 5 miles and stopped and fed our horses to a rich sesesh farm, then we started and went about a mile to a house and took a Rebel officer prison. He being at home on a visit. We then returned to camp .... The weather is cold with snow buy so cold as it is in our country. I have had some hoecake baked by a nxxxxr wench. It was good ..."
