A soldier in Hancock's 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac reports on the savage fighting of Lee's army during Grant's Overland Campaign, 1 1/2p. 4to., by "Evt.", Milford Station, [Caroline County], Va., May 22, [1864], to his brother, Charles, in part: "- well I feel as thankful to get a letter as I do to dodge a rebel shell. Tell Mother not to worry about the boys at war. We have but four months to stay and with our usual good luck will come out all right - we have the Johnnies tails down a little but they fight like Devil - we are in the 2d Corps so you can keep track of us by the papers - Evt." A supply line for Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, Milford Station was captured the day before on May 21, 1864 by Hancock's 2nd Corps. Minor soiling, else VG.
