Autograph Letter Signed , “Dr. K Cheirs”, 2pp. 8vo., [n.p.] July 24, [17]99, pertaining to a beating his slave girl Dolly had received at the hands of the school master. In part: "...am very sorry to inform you that my Negroe girl Dolly came to me yesterday treated in a manner that I dont think is becoming of any person, with one of her arms very much swelled with the stroke of a stick. She says that it was Mr Correll that keeps school that did it. But Mr. Correll must know that he has lay himself to the lash of the law. I did not expect that the negroe was to be whipt by every person that choose to do it or Col. Smith would not have got her. She is not well as this time...I do not intend to let the girl go to you....I believe it is better for me to keep the girl and perhaps better for you, if the negroe is not to receive no protection...I had rather than a good deal she had never been hired. I am sorry for you and my self too. I wish to give no offense But wish to do that is Right..." Minor paper loss at center fold complete separation, else Good.
