Manuscript Document Signed, 2p. folio, Burke County, North Carolina, September 19, 1831, being an agreement in which John Butler is made supervisor of all the slaves and overseers “not to exceed 150 slaves with the necessary overseers” at a North Carolina gold mine. The contract continues with entries that warrant Butler will follow proper bookkeeping practices, will have the use of two slave cooks, whose children are to remain with them, and for his services to recieve $1,000 per annum. VG. Before the California Gold Rush of 1849, North Carolina was a leading producer, with mine labor being one of the most feared slave occupations.
