Autograph Letter Signed “Ellen C. Ewing” wife of Union General Thomas Ewing, 6p. quarto, Leavenworth, Kansas, December 22, 1857, and reads in part: “...lately been deeply interested in the politics of this unhappy territory ...As to the future of Kansas, as free or slave, a few days will decide. Yesterday was the last election on that subject. Mr. Buchanan and his infamous supporters will in all probablity admit us as a state under a consitution that is repugnant to a large majority of the people and that makes it a slave state. If there were more free state votes polled yesterday than proslavery - we are safe - But these low drunken Missourians came over in crowds and it is not yet known what is the issue - Poor Kansas - The victim of frauds winked at by the Government - it is enough to make the blood boil - It is very easy to sit in high places in Washington and mockingly write and talk of Bleeding Kansas - But Kansas will bleed if that Consitution is forced upon the people. Senator Douglas nobly stands up for Kansas - and he stands above in taht democratic congress...” Much more. VG.
