Autograph Letter Signed “Ellen Cox Ewing” wife of Union General Thomas Ewing, 4p. quarto, January 23, 1858, Leavenworth, Kansas, it reads in part: “President Buchanan (the traitor) seems determined to admit us as a state under the odius Leacompton pro slavery constitution. This could be remidied if the free State men are successful in their election for state officers. For as soon as they were in power they could and would call a new convention & frame a new constitution. But if by enormous frauds in the territory they are defeated and their congress admits us under a pro slavry constitution valid for by only a small minority of the people. Civil War will be the result. Members of the free state men have sworn solemn oaths not to submit to the imposition. Thre have been enormous frauds committed and the infamous Calhoun Judge of the election returns says he will accept the returns with a pro slavery majority, when he well knows there are twenty free state men to one pro slavery man in the Territory...” Much more in this same vein. Fine.
