Autograph Letter Signed, “S. Verable” 1-1/2p. quarto, Memphis, Tennessee, October 11, 1861, and reads in part: “...Jeff escaped from jail here was arrested as a runaway and is now in jail at Raleigh. Joe says he has been offered one thousand dollars for Jeff but prefers to let Mr. Duff have him. He says if Mr. Duff will pay him $300 in cash and if the expenses of the jail about $20 - and return the notes that he holds he will wait 12 months for the balance of $200...I went to Joe’s shop today and had a long talk with him. He says it was his intention to let Jeff work until he made $800 and then go free. I asked him if Jeff knew this to which he replied no - that he had not told him. I then asked him to say that to Jeff now and take him out of jail. He replied no - that it was too late - that he never expected to see him again...” Fine.
