Lot of 3 Reconstruction era letters written by Northerners in the Deep South. Autograph letter Signed "Jas. W. Sunderland", 2 pages plus 2 pages of docketing, quarto, July 18, 1866, Meridian, Mississippi to Brevet Major J.J. Knox, Meridian, Mississippi. Sunderland was arrested for having simply tested his revolver in town concluded that "...the so-oft violated Ordinance is only put in force from the mere fact that of its having been an Officer of the Freedmen's Bureau who had violated it...". VF condition...Plus; Autograph Letter Signed "John J. Knox", 3 pages, quarto, August 19, 1866. Brookhaven, Mississippi to William W. Knox, Clarkston, Michigan. It reads in part: "...I made a speech to about 400 Freedmen previous to my departure from Meridian and the papers are giving me a terrible going over about it...there is no more freedom of speech now than there was previous to the war...I am thinking quite seriously about marrying again...she was a Yankee hater, a Reb, and engaged to one of her own nationality and parties. All of her family opposed to me and almost discarding her for keeping company of a Yankee Negro Bureau Officer...". With stamped cover. Missing half of 3rd and 4th pages, else VG condition...Plus; Autograph Letter Signed "J.J. Knox", one page, quarto, July 27, 1868, Athens, Georgia to his sister, location unknown. Knox writes in part: "...I feel lonely beyond my feeble power of description. have now only one white man with whom I am on friendly terms and threats of assassination increasing every day...". VF condition.
