John Brown Jr., right-hand man to his father during those frenzied Kansas years. 4 page beautifully penned letter entirely in his hand with a fine large signature. From his home in "Put-in-Bay, Ohio April 14, 1885." To F. B. Sanborn in Ithaca, New York, noted biographer of his father who had also served with him in the Kansas years. Acknowledges receiving two packages from Sanborn with publishers' proof of pages from the famous biography: "This is the first proof I've received…I had become uneasy at not getting any and had begun to fear another portion of it was lost." Noting various "slips" of page numbers received and that one of them about: "John Brown himself was near Topeka July 4'th…" Also writes of the steamship that brings regular mail daily and is anxious on not having received proofs in recent days, but mentions having returned all of chapters 9 and 10: "Have just finished reading the proof received this morning and see little to change…[will] take it over and read it with Owen. Ice in the Bay has become so weak is now necessary to drag a boat along for safety when crossing. …Have not heard from Sarah for sometime. Have written twice…one of them containing copies of the correspondence with F. G. Adams in relation to the medal…no reply as yet. Probably she is waiting answers from Salmon, and Aunt Ellen [all children of Old John Brown]." Exc. +.
