3½ page letter penned in his neat, small, easily read hand with full signature from Akron, Ohio February 5, 1895 also to noted Brown biographer F. B. Sanborn. Hard-up for money he seeks assistance: "I wrote to ask you if there is anything left of that fund raised for our benefit which would rightfully belong to me, or have I already had more than my proportion ? If anything is left I would be glad to get twenty-five or fifty dollars. …Sorry to ask…only necessity compels me. Owing to foolish debt, I lost and gave up everything I could sell mine in California [except for some small pieces of land] where Owen's grave is. …If there had been only one acre I would have been glad to stay on it… nothing here to depend on but my ability to work… my wife was taken with heart failure …am living alone on my son's lot. …they help all they can …even if I could leave the house my age 72 is against me." Apologizes again and says "only a little will be great help…" Interesting penned notation which made on bottom of page 4 in the bold hand by Sanborn himself: "Poor Jason ! I suppose it is his Ellen of who's 'sinking spells' sister Ruth writes. The fund is gone, but perhaps we can send him something. I will, for one" and he signs with his initials. Exc.
