JOHNSTON, Albert Sidney (1803-1862) Confederate general who prior to the war served as the Texas Secretary of War. During the Civil War he was placed in command of all Confederate forces west of the Alleghenies and was killed-in-action at Shiloh on April 6, 1862 while leading Confederate troops against the ‘Hornet’s Nest’. Manuscript Letter Signed, “A.S. Johnston” as Colonel 2nd Cavalry & Bvt. Brig. Genl., 1p. quarto, September 15, 1859, Head Quarters Department of Utah, Camp Floyd, Utah Territory, addressed to the U.S. Army Adjutant General, and reads in part: “...I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of the following communications from your office...Special Orders No. 135 & 139...Letter dated July 30, 1859 stating that by direction of the President certain lands at Fort Badger and Camp Floyd are reserved for military purposes...” Mounted at left margin, else VG.
