Archive of 15 Autograph Letters Signed "A.H. Jones", 33 pages, quarto, March 19, 1860 - July 18, 1861, Augusta, Georgia to William G. Porter, Methuen, Massachusetts. An enlightening correspondence wherein a Georgia businessman sends his son to boarding school in Massachusetts. The Civil War was, of course, on the horizon and the father's anxieties are evident in his writings. The letters read in small part: "(3/19/60)...I wrote to Mr Harlan a few days ago in relation to sending my son Edgar to Methuen to attend school for the next two years...(4/2/60)...we have no desire to raise our children to be genteely spoilt. let him wait on himself generally as negroes do everything here this may come hard at first...(10/25/60)...a storm is impending and all think the crash is but just ahead of us. Lincoln will be elected and I fear we shall have war to the knife. It is no time for young men to come out from the north...(12/27/60)...we are having terrible times here no business doing in any line and God only knows what the end of all this will be. I much fear lunatics north and demagogues south will bring war and desolation on the country...(4/27/61)...I have not time to write to Edgar today. tell him to keep very quiet come what may and not get into any trouble with the other boys...(5/17/61)...May God avert the impending storm...one would hardly realize that we are in a state of war but for the troops constantly passing through...(7/18/61)...we are very anxious to hear from our child. we know he is safe and in good hands...". With ten covers, nine of which are imprinted by Augusta stove dealer, S.S. Jones. Overall Fine condition.
