Autograph Letter Signed, “John B Meglasson” 3-1/4p. folio, Monroe City, Missouri, May 25, 1861, addressed to John P. Bayles in Kentucky, and marked “ I enclose this in the flag of the Southern Confederacy” it reads in part: “…the times is such as Missouri at this time as the State has never experienced since it has been a territory or state. Money is entirely disappeared the best and wealthiest men here cannot get enough to pay taxes …there was a constable sale in the neighborhood last Tuesday and as sure as I write there was not a single man attended except the constable himself…he swore he was going to resign his office….the times is not very flourishing in Missouri. The people here is in a great deal of excitement in consequence of the political troubles there is numerous companies forming and drilling through the state. We all look for a long and bloody war. I cannot see anything myself to prevent it, this state has not seceded yet that I know of although she may have doe so as the Legislature is now in Secesh session if it has not I believe it will eventually…I am opposed to the state taking that course at present I am in favor of a Armed neutrality until it comes to the worst…Pap has changed from a Douglas man to a Seceeder he is strong for the South and Jeff Davis and the Southern Confederacy…” VG.
