Group of four documents pertaining to Daniel Clifton (1843-1861) of Company K, 50th Virginia Infantry. The 50th Virginia was organized in July 1861, and was captured at Fort Donelson. After being exchanged it was assigned to the Department of West Virginia and fought at Carnifax Ferry. It participated in many battles with the Army of Northern Virginia from Chancellorsville to Cold Harbor. It moved with Early to the Shenandoah Valley and fought it’s last battle at Waynesborough. At the Battle of Gettysburg, it lost more than 40% of the 240 engaged. Included in this grouping are: Muster roll of dead soldiers of the 50th Virginia, 1p. double folio, October 1861, with related information and allowances due at the time of death. Private Clifton is the 2nd name on the list of the 39 men recorded. Each man is listed by full name with rank, and where, when, and by whom they were enlisted as well as payment particulars. VG....plus; Manuscript Document Signed, “Asa Scott Lt. Comdg. Co. K, 50th Va. Regt.” , 1p. oblong octavo, June 2, 1863, and reads: “This is to certify that Daniel Clifton private in Capt. Lawson Co. K 50th Va. Regt was enlisted June 22nd 1861 for 12 months & has never drawn any pay & that the above named Clifton died on the 16th of October...Nothing due the C.S.A.” Fine....plus; Two documents signed by Emanuel Clifton, one giving power of attorney to Lt. Noel to “collect all moneys due me for the service of my son Daniel Clifton in the S.C. Army he being a minor...” and the other “Capt. J. T. Lawson will please settle with W.T. Noel for the money due my son Daniel...” Both Fine. (4 items)
