Autograph Letter Signed, Cornelius Baldwin Hite, 1st Virginia Cavalry, 5pp. octavo., Edgeworth July 24, 1861, with fantastic content pertaining to JEB Stuart at 1st Manassas. In part: “....When I was in Winchester, I was right sick...Fountaine was with me most of the time, until our regiment was ordered out for something. Which being done, from Col. Stewarts [sic] mismanagement, we had another stamped. It was said that the foot companies were cut a good deal. Archie was not there he was Piedmont. I think Fountaine behind so he could not have been hurt. I have not weather Uncle Willie was hurt or not. They said that I would have to go to hospital...so I determined I wd see the Capt & go to Uncle Hugh Hites. But I could not find him...Beauregard gained two decided victories over the Yankees. He came very near taking Gen. Scott. He got all of his baggage. The loss on Thursday was about 1000 of their side & 11 killed on ours. The killed on Sunday was not over 3 hundred. It was a very bloody battle. They say the enemy lost about 10 or 12 thousand, beside 54 pieces of cannon. Do not show this to anyone except sister. Do not tell what I said about Col. Stuart...Most all of the officers are displeased with Col. Stuarts command. Roberts in a great hurry to go to Salem for James, who is here. He came from the Junction yesterday. He says that he saw Fontaine & uncle Willie at the Junction safe & sound. Archie is also there by this time. We gained a splendid victory. We took a train of wagon from the enemy about four miles long. It is reported that the enemy retreated to Washington in the greatest disorder. Beauregard is advancing to Alexandria. He will occupy it in a few days. James said the battle for eight [?} was covered with the dead. Mr. Holmes Conrad of Martinsburg lost two sons. A Mr. Payton Harrison was also killed...” VG.
