A historically significant Confederate navy document for the ironclad CSS Atlanta. 1p. oblong 12mo., partly-printed Savannah Harbor, Ga., Dec. 19, 1862 being a pay receipt for Assistant Surgeon R.J. Freeman while he served onboard the ironclad during the summer of 1862. The Atlanta began her Confederate naval career as the blockade-runner Fingal. After being bottled up in Savannah harbor by the US navy's Atlantic squadron. The Fingal was converted into an ironclad and renamed the Atlanta. On July 31, 1862, she made a trial run down the Savannah River towards Fort Pulaski stunning the Union forces at the appearance of such a vessel. On June 17, 1863, she attacked the Union fleet in Warsaw Sound. The USS Weekawken and USS Nahant engaged her, and after a short, but spirited fight her and her crew were surrendered. Assistant Freedman, and Paymaster William B. Micou, who signed this document, were both captured and confined at Fort Warren in Boston Harbor. A very rare Confederate document, since Confederate naval documents are almost nonexistent in the marketplace. Some spotting, else near fine
