Dist of Gulf, Mobile, Alabama, January 20, 1863, and reads in part: “...I have found things in my Department considerably confused and have been trying to straighten up...Mobile is like every other place where an attack is anticipated everybody seems to be thinking of it and preparing...Genl. B. has been absent on a tour of insepction for several days...alos expect a visit from Genl. Joe Johnston in a day or two...Tell Bro James to find out if I can keep John [a slave] longer than this month and whether I am to settle his hire with him or his Mistress...I would like to keep him as he is a very good boy but think his owners will hire him for less than $45.00...” Fine.
