Autograph Letter Signed by Joseph E. Mickle, 8th Alabama Infantry, 1p. folio, May 17, 1863, addressed to his brother, it reads: "...I am once more permitted to write you a few lines after being prohibited from that liberty for ten days. Today is just two weeks since I was taken prisoner. I am now in camp two miles from Richmond but have the liberty of going to town whenever I please....The enemy kept us confined near Washington for seven days. It is a very pretty place but I do not like it at all, although there are some Southern people in it. Any one that has green backs can get more for fifteen cents than I can get in Richmond for one dollar. They did not keep us in close confinement, but treated us very kindly. I received a letter from Isham a few days before I was taken prisoner. I expect to start back to the regiment on Tuesday..." VG.
