Group of Virginia military letters and documents pertaining to the 58th Virginia and includes documents involving the substitution of a minor for Milton J. Turner (1838-1891) WIA at 2nd Manassas, whose family had grown rich while trading and selling goods to the Confederate services. Turner’s substitute Ammon W. Dearing would serve for one year in the Confederate forces and then captured at Winchester in September, 1864. He was sent to Point Lookout, took the oath and joined the Federal forces. These documents include: Autograph Document, 1p. quarto, August 14, 1863, Camp Mt. Pisgah Church, Via. and reads in most part: “…On demand without interest I promise to pay to Ammon W. Dearing or his agent or guardian the Sum of one thousand dollars for and in consideration of his substituting in my stead in Co. G, 58th Virginia Regiment for the period of fourteen months commencing this day, and am also to furnish him with two substantial suits of cloths during this term of service, the condition of the above obligation is such that if the said Ammon W. Dearing should fail to serve the whole period of fourteen months by reason of being called in his own place, or any other reason not caused by the casualties of war or disease…” Docketed on verso, possibly Turner’s retained copy. Good…plus; Manuscript Document Signed, “P.C. Marshal”, 1p. octavo, Bedford County, August 25, 1863, and reads in part: “…This day P.C. Marshal guardian for Ammon W. Dearing personally appears before me J.H. Turner a justice of the County aforesaid and made oath that Ammon W. Dearing was just sixteen years old the third day of August eighteen hundred and sixty three (1863). The said P.C. Marshal is willing for the said Dearing to substitute for Milton J. Turner in the service of the Confederate States for the period of fourteen months…plus; Autograph Document Signed, 1p. 5”x2-1/2”, “Recd. March 8th, 185 of M. J. Turner the suit of clothes which he was to pay A.W. Dearing in part for substituting for said M.J. Turner. Oliver V.B. Dearing”. Dearing served with the 28th Virginia Infantry and was taken POW at Gettysburg, during Pickett’s Charge….Autograph Letter Signed, “T.H. Board Capt. Co. I. 58th Va. Regt.”, 1p. folio, Camp 58th Va. Regt. Somerville Ford, Orange County, Virginia, March 26, 1864, addressed to Milton J. Turner, it reads in part: “…I have furnished Jordan Ashwell with some blank descriptive rolls he tells me you will muster some recruits for him and others. If you should be able to get any you will have them to acknowledge the certificate on the bottom of the roll before a magistrate, and under the head of remarks state the time he is to report for duty, or be treated as a deserter…I hereby authorize and empower Milton J. Turner of the county of Bedford state of Virginia to sign my name to any descriptive roll on mustering in recruits to my company (I) 58th Va. Regt….” VG. Captain Thomas Henry Baord, was WIA at Gaines Mill, captured at Spotsylvania Court House, sent to Ft. Delaware and then became one of the Immortal 600…plus; Autograph Document Signed, “Wm A. Ashwell” WIA at Bethesda Church, 5/20/64, 1p. oblong octavo, Camp 58th Virginia, Orange Co. Virginia, April 22, 1864, addressed to Milton J. Turner, and reads in part: “…Yours of the 11th with Mrs. Fielders certificate enclosed came to hand this morning. I wish you to assist my wife in securing him for me do whatever you think best. If you can get him off by paying him $25(I would prefer it) & give the balance to Overstreet…Take his obligation for it - money paid by W.A. Ashwell as an inducement to him to join the C.S. Army…plus; Autograph Letter Signed “T.H. Board” Capt. 58th Virginia, 1p. oblong octavo, addressed to MJ Turner, and reads in part: “….It was proper to send me the certificate I have given it to Ashwell…If he fails to start report him to Col Watts immediately and have him arrested in no instance you must not let them know you are going to report them as soon as they are arrested…I am very desirous of Ashwell’s getting a furlough as he has been a faithful soldier & deserves one…” VG…plus; Manuscript Document Signed, 1p. oblong octavo, and reads: “…I Rebecca Fielder do certify that I am the mother only surviving parent legal mistress of John G. Fielder that the said John G. Fielder is 17 & 11 months years of age and I do hereby give my consent to his enlisting as a soldier in the Confederate States for the War…” Signed with her mark. and witnessed by Missouri E. Ashwell and one other. VG. John Fielder served with the 34th Virginia Infantry….plus; Autograph Letter Signed, “Jas M. Turner” 2nd Virginia Cavalry, WIA at Chancellorsville & Cold Harbor, 2p. octavo, pencil, Lynchburg, Virginia, April 25, 1864, and reads in part: “…I expect to return to my co. in a few days….I have been trying to get off for several days but the cars has been so crowded with Longstreets men that I could not get off. I expect I can get off in the morning as Longstreet’s men are about all massed by….Lee’s Army is in motion…there is a big fight on hand it will come off soon…Milton doubtless…has got home before this…” VG….plus; Autograph Letter Signed, “B.T. Ashwell” 58th Virginia, POW at Fredericksburg, 5/3/63, 2p. octavo, Camp 58th Virginia Regt., Orange County, April 23, 1864, in part: “…we are expecting a fight at any time we are fortifying every day. Milton I want you to try to get me a recruit if you can. I am willing to pay $125 and will satisfy you for your touble besides you must get them as cheap as you can and not pay over one hundred and thirty dollars…plus; Autograph Letter Signed, “T. A. Jeter” 2p. folio, January 16, 1862, Dublin, Pulaski, addressed to Jno. H. Turner, and reads in part: “…I have sold 600 lbs of candy since you left here & have orders now in Peters accompanied by the cash for 200$ north of one thing or other…I have an order out for 250lbs of candy. I am getting scarce on tobacco. I want you to send me some immediately at different prices. Send some of the best you have….The 45 Virginia Regiment is still at Thom. Spring & 1 company stationed here as a guard besides the old Hotel is crowded with sick men and their nurses, it is a hospital. …I want to put up a bake oven & smokehouse together I have ordered the lumber & engaged the workmen to do the work…It is generally though that Floyd will be back here in a short time with his whole Army, if so I would like a big stock on hand of various & sundry articles…I have been turning over the little capital that I have about once every week…I am buying bread in Lynchburg every few days…The Freight trains has resumed operations again & we can drop the thieving Patriotic, Southern Express Co….” At bottom is penned “Milton J. Turner” possibly carried by this soldier instead of mailed….plus; Autograph Letter Signed, John E. Fitzpatrick, 1st Sergeant, 58th Virginia, who was WIA and captured at Fredericksburg, May 4, 1863, fractured his lower jaw and lost 2/3ds of it and was wounded in the right shoulder, 2p. octavo, March 13, 1862, Camp near Front Royal, in part: “…we have been hard at work for several days tearing up the Rail Road leading from Strausburg to Manassas we have played destruction with it….the clothes you left with Frank Whorley we was afraid that some one would steal them out of the wagon and we concluded that we had better sell them and get the money so we can keep the money much better than we could the clothes…I have your new pants which I will pay you’re your price for them…” Fine. A wonderful grouping.
