Official Confederate Document, 1p. oblong octavo, Quartermaster General Office, December 28, 1864, authorized by General Lawton and by Major Randolph, though signed secretarially, this important communication addressed to Capt. William E. Duncan at Buchanan, Virginia, reads: “...I am authorized by the Hon. Secretary of War to extend the same assurance and guarantees given within to the owners of all slaves hired by any or all Officers of this Department...” VG. A nice late war date official slave compensation document.
