JORDAN, Thomas (1819-1895) Confederate brigadier general. Chief of Staff to Beauregard &Bragg and Adjutant General of the army. Accompanied President Jefferson Davis to the field after the Battle of Manassas. At the Battle of Shiloh, he was very active along the line, giving orders as occasion required in the name of General Johnston, and at one time having with him and under his direction the chiefs of staff of the different corps commanders. For this action he was promoted Brigadier General. Autograph Letter Signed, "Thomas Jordan", 4pp. 8vo., Richmond, Virginia, August 5, 1864, to General P.G.T. Beauregard. In part: "...In the opinion of the Attorney General seeking to...question...the validity of my appointment as a Brig. General it is asserted that there was never a Brigade to which I could be assigned and hence the appointment though confirmed by the Senate, being...illegal & hence must become invalid & void - My nomination was made at same time with Prestons, Maneys & one or two others...you made us Brigadiers yourself...I was the senior of the batch and a Brigade could have been found for me...Please do me the favor to say in an official letter to me...that you could have readily assigned me to a Brigade in the Army of Tennessee at the time...but that you preferred to have my service on your staff...I congratulate you on the result of Grants Assault - Hood does not appear more bent on a fight than Genl Johnston..." Mail fold, light toning, else VG. Great content letter.
