An extremely rare Confederate navy document for the ironclad CSS Georgia while it was assigned to duty at Savannah, Georgia. 1p.oblong 12mo., partly-printed [Savannah Harbor, Ga.], Dec. 1, 1864 being the monthly death return for two sailors who died upon her during November 1864 while she defended Savannah from ocean attack as Sherman marched up the Georgia coast. Three weeks after the completion of this document, upon the approach of Sherman's army, she was blown up by her crew. Signed on the verso by Lieut. Washington Gwathmey who, while serving in the US navy, carried orders from his superior north refusing to reinforce Fort Pickens, Georgia in April 1861. A very rare Confederate document, since Confederate naval documents are almost nonexistent in the marketplace. Very minor toning, else very good.
