HAMPTON, Wade (1818-1902) Reputed to be the largest landowner in the South in 1861. He organized the Hampton Legion, which fought under JEB Stuart. He was wounded at First Manassas and later severally wounded at Gettysburg. Surrendered with Johnston to Sherman. Autograph Letter Signed, “Wade Hampton” 1p. octavo, no date, addressed to General Burnside, and reads “Do look at the enclosed papers [not present] & see if you can join in the recommnedation of Capt. Leslie. I shall be glad to do so if some of our friends on the other side can....” VG.
