DAVIS, Jefferson. (1808-1889) President of the Confederate States of America 1861-65, Senator from Mississippi, Secretary of War 1853-57. Davis was captured by officers in the Union Calvary on May 10, 1865 in Irwinville, Georgia. Autograph Letter Signed, “Jefferson Davis” 1p. octavo, Beauvoir, to Reverend H.E. Hayden, in most part: “...the receipt of your pamphlet on the subject of explosive and poisoned balls. I read it with great satisfaction...The Confederates have been exposed to so much misrepresentation that many of them have been led innocently to consider us worse than we are and thus to justify those whose unmanly malignity would carry their vengeance beyond the grave...” VG. The ‘explosive and poisoned balls’ were deadly anti-personnel ammunition used in the Civil War. Davis is quick to note that, due to the use of this kind of ammunition, the Confederate Army came under fierce attack for being more brutal than its Union adversary, which used similar devices.
