ANDERSON, Robert (1805-1871). Best known as as the Union commandant of Fort Sumter, Anderson was a career soldier who had previously served in the Black Hawk, Seminole, and Mexican wars. Document Signed "Robert Anderson", ORDERS No. 89, 2 pages, quarto, October 24, 1838, Cherokee Agency (Tennessee). Anderson, in the capacity of Assistant Adjutant General, penned these orders on behalf of Major General Winfield Scott. This important document makes references to the Cherokee diaspora in relation to troop movements during the Second Seminole War. The orders read in part: "...The 3rd Artillery will proceed by lands & water to Gareys Ferry in Florida via Augusta as soon as Browns & Taylors detachments of Cherokees shall be put in march for the West...The 4th Infantry, with the exception of one company, to be left as a temporary garrison of Fort Cass, will hold itself in readiness to proceed by land & water...to relieve the 7th on the Arkansaw, when the whole of the latter will embark for Florida...".
