Gettysburg College was originally founded as Pennsylvania College in 1832. When the Civil War broke out in April 1861, the Pennsylvania College community responded like much of the country. Both faculty and students participated in political rallies and volunteered for service in the Union forces. A militia company was even formed by the students in June 1861. Autograph Album, 200+p. octavo, inscribed “E.W. Shell. Harrisburg, Penna. June 1st, 1855” it contains dozens of autographs of acquaintances of his while he attended Pennsylvania college (1855-58) with two as late as 1863. Most of signed with their hometown or Penna. College and have added the date it was signed. Unreaserched. Good.
