INGALLS, Rufus (1818-1893) Union Major General; He was present at the battles of South mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the subsequent battles till the surrender of Lee. Autograph Letter Signed, “Rufus Ingalls” 2p. quarto, December 30, 1857, Fort Vancouver, Washington Territory, addressed to William A. Gordon, and reads in part: “...I am ignorant at this time of our exact relations with the Mormans, and of course, have had no way of knowing how they treated our Army, wor what operations may be carried on against them....you are aware that I have wintered at the Lake, and crossed the continent and that I have always been on our frontiers, all over and around them, still were I in command it is more than likely I should be in doubt as to the best point or points from which to operate. Capt. Van Vliet exact in all other matters...understimates the fighting strength of the Mormons. If there be a war with them, there will also be hostilities with Indians East and West. The Indians here are insolent and restive now. But a War - a guerrilla one at that, with frontiers, the seat of which is 1000 or 1200 miles from the base will tax the energy and ability of our Department to a great degree... VG.
