Autograph Letter Signed, 4p. quarto, Ottawa, LaSalle Co, Illinois, December 4, 1860, with great content, in part: “....As the minds of the American people for months past has been principally engaged in a great political struggle and the battle now being fought & won on the side of Justice as I hope...it now seems taht the secession movement of the South was likely to keep us in commotion for some time...I do hope our Government will take a decided stand on the Constitution & have nothing to do with the compromises with slavery or slaveholders...if the Cotton States wish to separate from the others let them go. The other Slaveholding states I think would then soon become free states & we should be rid of a foul blot on our nation of character...I hope we have elected a man qualified for the times & the more I hear about him the better I am satisfied we have. If he only gets the right men into his Cabinet matters will all be settled right in my opinion. There is an overuling providence in all governments that frequently brings forth results that were but little expected by the people & this secession movement may be the very means of doing away Slavery in this country for I doubt whether all the slave states combined could sustain themselves with Slavery ten years. The slaves would either free themselves by force or starve out their masters...” Fine.
