Autograph Letter Signed, “Geo. W. Ladd” 2nd New Hampshire Artillery, WIA 2nd Bull Run, 6p. octavo, patriotic stationary, Camp Sullivan, Washington, July 24, 1861, and reads in part: “...Just a week ago yesterday we left this camp with our brigade (composed of the N.Y 71st, 1st &2d Rhode Island Regt. 2 Batteries and 200 cavalry)...of course you have read of our triumphant entree into Fairfax Court House...we made a forced march...and we being center column...commenced the battle. The Rebels poured in on us from masked batteries from all sides but our army [?] everything before us until the rebels were reinforced by fresh troops and some officerless troops gave the alarm and our whole army fell back, but it is not half as bad as represented. The city folks were afraid that Beauregard would attack Washington so Gen. McDowell ordered us to the city...Out of the 74 Regts intended to have been there the true number was 22 Regts....The company to which I have the honor of being a member is composed of young men of Concord NH 101 of us armed with ‘Sharps Rifles’ through the liberality of our Citizens) and sunday I saw 2 of my schoolmates at the age of 18 shot down dead...I had a cousin shot in Baltimore the first that fell in teh cause. Luther Ladd of the Mass Six and when I received news of his death I told my folks that I would go and try and revenge his death and my brother in N.Y. joined the flying Artillery and myself teh only remaining child came on with teh N.H.V...” VG.
