BUCKINGHAM, William (1804 - 1875) Civil War Governor of Connecticut who worked closely with Lincoln, raising a greater than required number of volunteers. Autograph Letter Signed, “Wm W. Buckingham” 2p. quarto, on governors lettersheet, July , 1861, addressed to General I.D. Williams, and reads in part: “…I should go at once to the War Department & offer the 5 Regt & trust it will be full by Tuesday…I fear that if wanted at once as I think they may be that there may be some embarrassment from premium of furloughs to many of the men….If Gen. Mansfield asks for cannon let him or the U.S. Government have much as we can. Have Col. Matheny order them from Springfield at once if they are rifled. If not request that they may be completed at once unless the government wants them as they are…Manage military matters as you think best until you hear from me…I hope all camp equipage & clothing is ready for the 5 Regt…” Fine.
