BUCKINGHAM, William (1804 - 1875) Civil War Governor of Connecticut who worked closely with Lincoln, raising a greater than required number of volunteers. Manuscript Letter Signed, “Wm. A. Buckingham” 1-1/2p. quarto, April 27, 1861, on State of Connecticut lettersheet, addressed “Dear General” it reads in part: ‘...Accept the services of Capt. Southard company of artillery...Let Lieut. Hollabird have the post of Lieut. Colonel of the 3d Regt as soon as he arrives...Write or telegraph to Lieut. Arthur N. Dutton at West Point that I will give him the post of Major in one of the Regiments...” VG.
