GAYLORD, Emerson. Massachusetts military equipment dealer and manufacturer during the Civil War. Autograph Letter Signed, 2p. quarto, Chicopee, October 1, 1862, addressed to G.P. Hornell & Co., it reads in part: “...I send you...one hide of Bull L. that is so small and light that cannot use it. I found some of such had been cut up before I saw it...gave orders not to have any more of that kind...it will not cut belts enough to pay much more than half the cost of the hide - it must all be large and plump to make the job pay. I have lost some thousand dollars within the last fifteen monts in my efforts to make use of your Buffalo by waiting for your leather when I could get grain leather and sold my goods. There is not the money made on buff belts taht there is on other leather...” VG.
