Autograph Letter Signed, 6p. quarto, Camp on the Potomac, September 14, 1862, in part: “...Thinking perhaps that you might like to hear fo the welfare of Co. L 6 O.V.C....I...will write you...Gen. Seigeles Corps in the advance...we crossed the river the bridge was burned and the Army of Va was in full retreat we in the rear to keep up the stragglers and with orders to burn and destroy all waggons and stores left behind. We burnt several good waggons loaded with tents & c. The next weveing about dusk we passed through Culpepper very hungry had, had nothing to eat that day but a cracker and cup of coffee; stopped at a Hotel which was used as a hospital and through the influence of the surgeon succeeded in getting some supper of the Old Secesh Landlady...In the last two days there had been captured nearly 300 prisoners and we had them in charge. The most of them, were stragglers and as ragged, sick, barefooted, lousy, dirty looking lot of fellows as you ever saw. The water was very poor and they would dip up the thick red muddy water by the side of the road to drink...Friday there was a pretty general engagment and fighting along nearly the whole of Gen. Seigles line. I was where I could see the most of it. We were not immediately engaged but the cannon balls and shells came unpleasently near, and there appeared to be a general disposition to dodge down the heed, whether to avoid the shells invluntary or not, I could not tell. The same attempt was made to turn Gen. Seigles left on Friday and defeated, that was made on McDowell’s on Saturday and succeeded. But the gallant Seigel is everywhere and sees to everything himself and is not caught napping...” More. Good.
