DEVENS, Charles (1820-1891) Union brigadier general who led Divisions in the 11th, 18th, and 24th Corps. Autograph Letter Signed, “Chas Devens Col” 2p. octavo, undated c. 1861-62, directing 15th Mass. Lieutenant Hans Peter Jorgensen to continue his recruiting efforts in Washington. Wounded in the recent Battle of Ball’s Bluff - which the heavily-engaged 15th Mass. suffered 302 casualties - Lt. Jorgensen was later KIA in the 2nd days fightin at Gettysburg. The letter reads in part: “...The general will get an order today for you to recruit from Washington. Send on any men you may get by Willard or Daniels...Go on with the recruiting as if you had an order...” VG.
