Journal of Sergeant Philander Smith, Co. "B", 8th Indiana Volunteers, 30 pages, quarto, January - July, 1862, various locations in Missouri and Arkansas. This document is missing the days between March 3 and April 19, during which time the regiment participated in the battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas. The remaining entries largely concern camp life, letters sent and received, and observations on incidents of the war. Written variously in pen and pencil, Paper loss to edges, fading and aging. Fair condition...Plus; Partially printed document, INVENTORY AND INSPECTION REPORT, 2 pages, oblong folio, July 16, 1864, Algiers, Louisiana. Smith, now a lieutenant, is named as the officer responsible for the defective stores listed on this report. The 8th Indiana is shown as having possessed 31 defective rifles comprised of Springfields and Enfields. Some stains, else VG condition...Plus; Manuscript promotion record, 2 pages, octavo, May 20, 1885, Kansas City, Missouri. Smith's service record showing promotions from Sergeant to First Lieutenant is written on one of his post-war letterheads. "P.Smith" survived the war to become a "Dealer in Wood, Coal, Feed and Well Augers. Also Contractor for Boring and Drilling Wells." Aging, else VG condition.
